What is "Civility"?
-
Values
Our life journeys have given each of us varying core beliefs and fundamental ideals that became our values. Respecting those differences between one another is the civil thing to do. We should honor, seek to understand but don't have to agree with.
-
Honor
Show respect and recognize another's right to their points of view trying to hear their heart. It is not compromising one's own beliefs OR endorsing theirs. But valuing them as individuals that has had a different life journey.
-
Community
Everyone has the right to make one's own informed choices that do not infringe on others or break laws. We need opportunities to have reasoned discussions for us to function effectively as a functioning society.
Why is it Important?
Values guide our choices reflecting who we are at our core shaping our identity. They will foster trust and the building of meaningful relationships creating common ground leading to mutual respect. Without honorable or core values, our life lacks a sense of purpose or a moral compass. The debate in values come from differing moral foundational beliefs in standards.
Honor for others is vital to functioning societies and personal relationships. It will foster respect by valuing another’s dignity and rights to make choices, even if we disagree, opening doors for constructive interactions. When trust is built. it gives a person more willingness to act with integrity and honesty. Trust is a cornerstone to embrace progress. Honor can breed individual accountability for their actions which enhances respecting societal norms and laws.
Societies rise and fall on the level of community its members feel that they can belong, are embraced and celebrated for who they are. A strong community will unite people around common goals to achieve what was not possible individually. By pooling resources, talents and knowledge, problems are more likely to be resolved. Challenges arise in community where cultural norms are challenged, and sub-groups unite to be honored and respected. Choices are a human right. But the influence on society as a whole must be part of the discussion. Open dialogue and civil discourse are critical to having these viable discussions.
